The party continues

The day after Christmas, and we are still celebrating! Nana and Papa arrive around suppertime, and Uncle Todd and Uncle Hector arrive late Friday evening, bringing our newest member of the family. Baby Cole was born in October. Alex and Casey are so excited to get to hold him.

Saturday the rest of the family arrives--The Denver Smiths drive in by lunchtime, and that evening they are lined up on the sofa, waiting to open more gifts-------------------

Merry Christmas

We started the day with our own Christmas tree, where we discovered we are finally a 21st century family--we got a Wii! And lots of other great stuff, too. We can't wait to play with it all, but we must...we have to get going down to grandma's!

****************************

Grandma opens the first gift before lunch. We needed those two new place settings of Christmas dishes to set the table!

We had a great dinner, we are all too full, but that won't keep us away from the tree! Those presents are just too tempting...the wrapping paper starts to fly.

Everyone is all smiles, and some of us can't wait to get started.

We end the day with a walk around the pond.

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Work is almost complete on our do it yourself basement update. We started out with a theme room--I think it was 50's juke joint inspired. We had the black and white tiled floors throughout. One room had wallpaper covered with tiny albums, the other wallpaper had bowling, juke boxes, old cars, etc. The wallpaper was not easy to get off, but we were determined and persevered...

Finally, a clean wall to prime and paint.

And we chose my favorite color, red! The tv room is all red, the game room has one red accent wall and paneling on the other three. We had golden wheat carpet installed, and have ordered some cabinets for the tv wall. Later we'll put in some bookshelves on the accent wall in the game room. Foosball, anyone?

Santa Brunch 12/7

We had a great time and wonderful food at the Santa brunch last weekend, and even ran into the man himself. Of course we're not too old to sit in his lap. How else will he know Alex wants an ipod and a cell phone for Christmas? Mom and Dad aren't buying either...

So many birthdays, so much cake to be eaten! The girls and I went to Calhoun to help our cousins celebrate Sydney Claire's Backyardigans Birthday.

Next we took Dad out for a buffalo burger at Ted's Montana Grill

And for our grand finale, Casey Ann turns 9 with a family dinner of favorite appetizers, including sushi.

And August Flies By...

August 7--We celebrated Alex's number 11 birthday with a trip to her new favorite restaurant, The Mellow Mushroom. Though we couldn't get into the super cool "tree" seating area, we did get a bench outside of it.

Back at home we had a big chocolate chip cookie cake waiting for her.

August 11, the first day of our new schools! Casey is all ready to catch the first bus with her new Hannah Montana book bag. Alex will catch a later bus for middle school.

August 16, we had cookout with my best friends from high school.
Trudi, Rhonda, me and Beth with Casey and Sadie, who is suddenly shy!

Trudi and Holly pose for a snapshot.

Dave and Trudi's husband Wayne were there, too, as well as Alex and Trudi's son Journey.

Can't wait for the next reunion!

North Carolina Vacation

While June was filled with moving days and all of the work that that creates, July was a month of vacations! On the 10th Dave took the girls to Syracuse to spend two weeks with Nana and Papa. They had a wonderful time camping at Green Lake and going to Thunder Island Waterpark. But eventually Dave and I missed them and decided to get them back.
We met up with Nana and Papa in Raleigh to make the exchange. While Dave and his Dad played cribbage at the the National Open, Shirley and I took the girls to the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. We spent most of the day there, seeing the Magic Wings Butterfly House and the Catch the Wind exhibit among other things.

We had a great time in Raleigh, going to a movie, playing miniature golf, and of course, going to our favorite restaurant, the 42nd Street Oyster Bar. On Tuesday Nana and Papa left for their trip back to NY, and we headed west to meet up with some of my family...
---------------------------------
We stopped to do some mining in Hiddenite. They have a place there where you can buy buckets of dirt for sluicing, and also go down on the creek to dig for things like amethyst and smoky quarz, adventurine, and even sapphires and rubies, which apparently look like round black rocks before you crack them open and polish them...we didn't find anything valuable, but we had fun and have a new rock collection.

On Wednesday we travelled on to Dad's cabin in the Smoky Mountains, not too far from Asheville, and on Thursday we went down to hike along Deep Creek. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed being outside.

But all of those people tubing down the creek were having a blast, and we couldn't resist. We got ourselves some tubes and went down the creek, too, wearing our clothes as we hadn't brought our swim suits with us

*******************************
Thursday night Steve arrived with Kelly, Zoe, Kyle and Jordan. We convinced them that they really needed to go tubing down Deep Creek, so Friday we headed back out...
It started out great, we brought our suits this time, Dave decided to sit out and take pictures, Jordan stayed on the bank with him, and Zoe sat in Kelly's lap.

Here we go!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wait a minute! What are you guys doing out of the tube?? oops, Kelly and Zoe got dumped at the first drop, and Zoe wasn't too thrilled about it...
She managed to hang on a little bit longer, but when we were able to get close to the bank, she got out with big brother Jordan and Uncle Dave.
The rest of us floated on, sometimes facing forward, sometimes backwards, rescuing shoes when necessary, losing each other, catching up again, and finished the trip in without incident.
Then we grabbed our tubes and hiked back up to go again! Zoe may disagree, but we think this is fun!
++++++++++++++
Dad had reserved a pontoon boat for Saturday, so we spent the day on Fontana Lake, enjoying some swimming and a little fishing.
We had Dad to navigate and the kids took turns driving the boat, so what could go wrong?
Well, actually, nothing, it was a perfect day...even Zoe decided water was not so bad and got in for a swim.
Sunday, and we must all return to our homes and jobs. School will be starting in just a week, how can summer be over already?!
